‘Lesbianism’ Considered A Medical Condition In North Carolina

Kristina Rodriguez was outraged when she visited Lake Park Family Practice in North Carolina to have blood work done. She visited the healthcare provider worrying that her iron was low, but they had a different prognosis. When Rodriguez picked up her medical chart, she saw that “Lesbianism” was listed as a main “medical problem.”

“This listed as a medical problem could really set someone back, could mess with their self-esteem and could make them think something is wrong with them,” Rodriguez explained. The hospital allegedly told her that “Lesbianism” was listed as a medical problem to protect her from being offended. If they had this hard of a time identifying what is and is not offensive, we worry about their accuracy in finding iron levels.
