Gambia Celebrates The Return Of Their New President

After retreating to Senegal to be sworn in while former President Jammeh packed up his things, Gambia’s new President Adama Barrow finally returned to his country, prompting celebrations across Gambia. Hundreds waited for President Barrow at the airport to welcome him, where he arrived in a flowing white robe and glided down a red carpet to greet military officials. By yesterday afternoon, thousands of people had lined the streets of Banjul, the capital, dancing and chanting “We welcome you, our president, our hope, our solution.” Gambia was thrown into chaos in December when former President Yahya Jammeh refused to step down after losing the elections. After 22 years in power, Jammeh finally took the hint and left last weekend. Though the transition of power wasn’t exactly easy, Barrow’s return is already a symbol of hope for Gambians who want reform.
