Officer Charged In Death Of Philando Castile

Jeronimo Yanez, the police officer who shot and killed Philando Castile outside of Minneapolis this summer, will be charged with second-degree manslaughter. John Choi, the local prosecutor, made the decision to charge Yanez himself rather than in conjunction with a grand jury. Castile’s girlfriend was with Castile when he was killed and streamed the aftermath on Facebook Live. There have been 836 people killed by police in America in 2016, but according to an analysis by the Minnesota Star Tribune, this is the first time on record that a police officer has been charged in connection with a police-involved death in Minnesota.
