Another Terror Attack In France…

At least 73 people died when a truck drove into a crowd celebrating Bastille Day in the town of Nice on the French Riviera. Officials are labeling the event a terrorist attack although, at time of writing, it remains unclear who was behind it or what their motivations were. This is the third major terrorist attack in the span of 18 months. Previous violence included attacks on the offices of satirical cartoonist Charlie Hebdo, a Jewish Deli and a multi-pronged attack in Paris last November that killed 130 people.

What now?

France was just beginning to pick itself up from last November’s attack, with French President Hollande ending the state of emergency yesterday morning. Already France has enacted sweeping surveillance and anti-terror laws as well as increased spending on defense and intelligence so it’s not immediately obvious what more it could do. The attack will no doubt boost the far-right National Front party as it positions itself for next year’s presidential election.
