Hope everyone enjoyed Turkey Day and Black Friday (including, oddly enough, the Brits). It was a big weekend for the Pnut family — we celebrated two birthdays and an engagement!

IN A NUTSHELL: MUST READ

Planned Parenthood Attack Recap

Robert Lear killed three people, including one police officer at a Planned Parenthood (PP) clinic in Colorado Springs, Colorado on Friday. This was the worst act of domestic terrorism since the shooting of nine people at an historic black church in Charleston, SC this summer. PP officials said the shooter was opposed to abortion (one of the many services the reproductive health provider offers), and police say he mumbled something about “baby parts” during an interview. There has been an increase in attacks on PP clinics ever since the release of doctored video footage alleging that PP was selling aborted fetuses.

Turkey/Russia: Macho Men And The Threat Of Nuclear War

Tensions continued to rise between Turkey, Russia and Syria (world’s worst threesome) after Turkey downed a Russian jet for allegedly violating Turkish airspace for 17 seconds while bombing Syrian rebels. Here is what went down:
  • Turkey returned the body of the downed Russian pilot.
  • Putin signed economic sanctions agains Turkey, including restrictions on imports, foreign workers and stopping charter holidays to Turkey.
  • Russia deployed anti-aircraft guns in the Mediterranean and in Syria to warn Turkey from trying it again.
  • Israel pointed out that a Russian jet entered its airspace, and they didn’t shoot it down.
  • A Belgian physicist calculated that everyone is probably lying about where/when the plane was when it was shot down (caveat: we can’t confirm his calculations).
Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan has sent mixed signals over the downing of the jet but has yet to apologize. Vladimir Putin demands an apology before he can move forward. Smells a lot like high school, but with a lot of heavy weaponry involved.

NUTS AND BOLTS: SHOULD READ

Climate Change: We Should Probably Do Something About It

Thousands of people around the world held rallies to pressure world leaders, meeting in Paris today, to adopt stricter measures to combat climate change. Paris, the victim of recent terror attacks, saw some clashes between protesters, who defied a state of emergency, and police. The Tour Eiffel lit up in green for the talks. Even the Chinese government issued a report about the risks climate change poses for China (spoiler alert: it’s a lot of risks). Meanwhile, Zuck and Gates announced a new clean energy fund to help fight Climate Change.

Cameron And Fighting ISIS: Can We Just Start Bombing?

The UK is set to vote on air strikes in Syria this week but the result is uncertain with opposition from Labour leader, and parliamentary beard of the year, Jeremy Corbyn. Failure to vote for strikes would be a major embarrassment for the Prime Minister who has been trying to convince MPs to vote in favor. Meanwhile, further mass graves were uncovered in Northern Iraq and four policemen were killed by ISIS in an attack in Egypt.

Pope Francis: ‘Here’s My Next Trick… Peace!’

The Pope that continues to razzle and dazzle went on his most ambitious trip to date, the Central African Republic (CAR). Pope Francis’ visit comes at a tense time as the country still tries to heal from a civil war fought on confessional lines between Christian and Muslim militias. The country, while tenuously at peace, remains divided. The Pope kicked off a year of “forgiveness and reconciliation” in CAR, bringing a message of peace and a migraine for his security detail.

Keeping Our Eye On…

  • Kobe Bryant: The Los Angeles Lakers star announced his retirement via poem over the weekend. One of the greatest players of all time, Bryant ranks third on the NBA’s career scoring list leaving behind a legacy that will be hard to top.
  • China Goes Big: China’s currency, the Yuan, is expected to join the IMF’s list of reserve (major) currencies (joining the US Dollar, the Euro, the Yen and the British Pound). This is largely symbolic to show that China is now a big global hitter.
  • Refugee Deal: The EU offered Turkey cash ($3 billion) and the possibility of joining the EU in return for their help on the refugee crisis. Meanwhile, Turkey arrested journalists on charges of espionage for reporting on Turkish help to Islamic extremists in Syria.

LOOSE NUTS: FOR YOUR ENJOYMENT

How To Make $70k By Trolling Black Friday

Cards Against Humanity, that offensive board game that you secretly love playing, did a special Black Friday deal where for $5 you received…..nothing. Absolutely nothing. Over 11k people paid the amount with some even paying $100. The team said that they would be spending the money on things like a divorce attorney, Tylenol and a suit of armor as well as donating to charity. In previous years they have given away boxes full of poop for $6. This is an impressive business model.
