IN A NUTSHELL: MUST READ

Pope Prepares For US Visit With A Cuban Cigar

Pope Francis delivered messages of peace in Havana yesterday as part of his first visit to the communist nation. The Pope urged the Colombian government and FARC (communist rebels) who were meeting in Havana to find peace. He also urged the US and Cuba to deepen relations.

The Pope is headed to the US tomorrow to address a joint session of Congress. The “most popular man in the world” is expected to speak on things like inequality and climate change, which is making him very unpopular among some Republican lawmakers. But do they really want to boycott the Pope? P.S. If you plan on seeing the Pope, keep your selfie sticks at home.

US To Take In Refugees… Eventually

As the refugee crisis continues to escalate in Europe, resulting in more drownings, the US has leapt into action. John Kerry announced that the US will take 85,000 refugees in 2017 (15 months from now). The number represents ~2% of the four million refugees that the Syrian Civil War has created. Meanwhile, the EU received 62,000 Syrian asylum applications in August 2015 alone (430,000 since the start of the crisis).

Planned Parenthood Shutdown

In a move that will definitely get vetoed, House Republicans voted to defund planned parenthood (PP). PP, the largest organization that provides reproductive and women’s health services in America, has been caught up in a controversy regarding selling the tissues of aborted fetuses. PP vehemently denies the allegations. The House vote will set the stage for a possible government shutdown at the end of the month.

Greece: Third Time’s A Charm

Syriza, Greece’s populist far-left party, won a snap parliamentary election over the weekend that ensures they can form a government with the far-right Independent Greeks (IG). Panos Kammenos, head of IG, is known for believing in wild conspiracies like “chemtrails.” He will likely retain his post as Defense Minister. Syriza will now have to implement the harsh terms of the agreed bailout… good luck?

Brazil’s Rousseff Might Get ‘Carwashed’

Brazil’s President Dilma Rousseff faced the biggest challenge to her rule as the opposition party submitted a request to impeach her in Congress last week. Rousseff has been caught up in a corruption scandal concerning the state oil company Petrobras. The anti-corruption investigation, code-named “operation carwash,” has implicated many politicians and businessmen in the country. Rousseff, who was Chairwoman of Petrobras at the time, claims she has no idea what happened.

#pnut4prez: Post-Debate Poll Shockers (Not So Much)

The CNN/ORC poll released Sunday morning delivered some very unsurprising results in the aftermath of the debate. Carly Fiorina came out the clear winner (51% of Republican respondents agreed with this sentiment), jumping from just 3% to 15% of support among respondents. Trump lost some ground, yet still maintains the lead at 24%. Ben Carson was also down 5 points to 14%. Maybe the only shocking result is that Marco Rubio is now in fourth place with 11%… apparently his over-rehearsed spiel was effective.

Keeping Our Eye On…

  • Emmys: Viola Davis was the first African-American woman to win an Emmy for best lead actress in a drama for “How to Get Away With Murder.” Don Draper and Game of Thrones finally took home Emmys as well.
  • Burkina Faso: The Junta that staged a coup in Burkina Faso earlier this month doesn’t want to leave power (shocking) until elections are held.
  • Fighter Jets: Russian jets were spotted in Syria as part of Putin’s growing commitment to backing Syrian President Assad. Meanwhile a whopping 75 US-backed fighters entered Syria… stay tuned.

Japanese Politicians Brawl To Change The Constitution

Japan’s parliament, the Diet, resembled a UFC wrestling cage last week as its members started brawling while debating… wait for it… pacifism. Since the end of the Second World War Japan’s constitution forbids Japanese troops from being deployed overseas, a situation which Prime Minister Shinzo Abe is looking to change in the face of the growth of the China’s power in the region. The bill was passed and now sits in the upper chamber for final approval. Who said violence doesn’t solve anything?
