IN A NUTSHELL: MUST READ

Ukraine Protests Turn Violent

Violent protests took place in Ukraine’s capital yesterday, injuring up to  90 people and killing a national guardsman. Lawmakers had voted to give more autonomy to the pro-Russian rebel-held East of the country. Nationalists violently disagreed with the decision as a concession to Russia (who may or may not have invaded the East of the country) and started throwing grenades. Ukraine President Poroshenko said that violence was a “stab in the back” and a necessary measure. This violence occurred in a country with legendary parliamentary brawls

Germany Takes Lead in European Refugee Crisis

German Chancellor Angela Merkel rebuked the rest of Europe yesterday, saying that “if Europe fails on the question of refugees, then it won’t be the Europe we wished for.” Her statements come as crises touch at least six different European borders and in the face of xenophobic attacks against migrants within Germany. Meanwhile, Austria began conducting spot checks on vans crossing in from Hungary after a lorry with 70 decomposing bodies was found on a highway last week.

How can the EU solve this crisis?
EU leaders are going to get around to meeting about this issue in two weeks (no rush). There are a number of pressing issues that people hope they will do (aside from building fences). EU leaders will have to define, when, how and where refugees can ask for asylum. They will also have to create a EU-wide policy on who is considered a refugee and who is considered a migrant. The more difficult part of what do after they have applied will likely be tackled later.

EDITOR’S NOTE: Why we use “refugee,” not “migrant”

NUTS AND BOLTS: SHOULD READ

Americans Unhappy With America

A recent poll by Quinnipiac University found that 71% of Americans were unhappy with the direction the country is going in. Only 2% of Americans said they were “very satisfied.” That’s lower than the percentage of Americans satisfied with their bank or telecom provider. The poor results probably explain why political outsiders like Donald Trump and Bernie Sanders are faring so well in the polls.

India Grows At Exact Same Pace As Rival China

India’s economy posted an annualized 7% GDP gain last quarter, which was coincidentally the exact same as China’s growth rate over the same period (wink wink, nod nod). India and China (the IC in BRICs) have experience an (un)healthy rivalry the past few decades that has them bickering over issues like borders, who has the better government (democracy or dictatorship) and which country is the best place to invest in.

Turkey Arrests VICE Reporters For… Reporting

Two British VICE news reporters were arrested and charged with “working on behalf a terror organization.” Turkey, which is currently attempting to hit “refresh” on its election results, is quite sensitive when it comes to reporting on its “war on terror.” This probably stems from the fact that there is some degree of confusion as to whom exactly Turkey is fighting and why. Clearly, it’s much easier to lock up journalists than answer these questions.

#pnut4prez: Carson Surges In Iowa Polls, Neck And Neck With Trump

In a turn of events, a recent poll found that Ben Carson is tied with Donald Trump for the lead in Iowa. Coming in strong at 23%, the neurosurgeon previously lagged far behind with only 8% in late July (Walker was in the lead at 22% and Trump at 13%). The other frontrunners in Monday’s poll are Carly Fiorina at 10% and Ted Cruz at 9%. Carson should give Trump a run for all of his $2.9 billion (but who’s counting?).

Keeping Our Eye On…

  • Oil Prices Up: Oil prices surged on Monday, resulting in the biggest three-day gain since 1990. Prices rose 9% to $49.20 per barrel in New York. One reason? OPEC started to actually talk to each other… a miracle.

  • Bangkok: Two weeks after the deadly Bangkok bombings, Thai police raided apartments and are looking for two suspects — a woman and a foreign man with a fake passport. For their endeavors, the police awarded themselves the 3 million baht ($111,000) reward.

  • Temples: Satellite images confirmed that ISIS destroyed the beautiful 2,000-year-old ruins of the Temple of Bel in Palmyra. ISIS has been destroying archeological sites as part of an online recruitment campaign…

Tom Brady Too Good Looking For Art

A court sketch artist had to apologize to Tom Brady after she drew him looking like Lurch from the Addams Family (Brady looks like Captain America). The husband of supermodel Gisele Bundchen and New England Patriots quarterback had been in court as part of the “deflate-gate” scandal. The artist, Jane Rosenberg, said he was difficult to draw as something subtle “goes on with his eyes.” And the fact that he had only been in the courtroom for four minutes. Her painting is just another poor victim of the modern internet mob.
