Pope addresses “land of the free, home of the brave” and weekend reads

PNUT GALLERY

“We, the people of this continent, are not fearful of foreigners, because most of us were once foreigners. I say this to you as the son of immigrants, knowing that so many of you are also descended from immigrants.†-Pope Francis in his address to Congress (we can’t really get enough of him, can you?)

IN A NUTSHELL: MUST READ

Pope To Congress: Now Now Children

“Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” That was the Pope’s message to Congress yesterday as he encouraged them to find common ground and get to work. Speaking in heavy accented English, the Pope addressed issues as diverse as climate change (stop it), immigration (show empathy), the death penalty (stop it too), the importance of the family in society and asking God to bless America.

The Pope, who had been branded as a communist by some conservative critics, ended up giving a softer than expected speech, “unifying more than dividing” the very divided Congress. It took about 10 minutes to go back to business as usual (government shutdown in six days). Read the full speech here

Mecca Stampede Kills Over 700 People

A stampede in the Muslim holy city of Mecca, Saudi Arabia, killed 717 people during the annual Hajj (pilgrimage). Roughly two million people visited Mecca this year. The stampede occurred as a group returning from Jamarat (stoning satan) collided with a group heading in the opposite direction. Iran, who lost 47 citizens in the stampede, didn’t miss the opportunity to take a dig at their regional rival, blaming the Saudi’s for “mismanagement.” The exact cause, however, is still unclear and an investigation is underway.

NUTS AND BOLTS: SHOULD READ

Xi Pays More Attention To Pope Speech Than Congress

It turned out Chinese President Xi Jinping and President Obama were listening to the Pope’s message on climate change. They will announce today a joint vision for a climate change agreement and a Chinese carbon cap-and-trade scheme in 2017. China will now be the biggest carbon market in the world, and Trump still claims they are doing nothing to help the environment.

Greek Minister Realizes Anti-Semitism Won’t Get Him Far

Greek Deputy Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Dimitris Kammenos “resigned” after a series of homophobic and anti-Semitic tweets caused uproar in the government. Kammenos, of the far right Independent Greeks, claimed that his social accounts were “hacked” and that he condemned racism. The party boss (also called Kammenos and also known for anti-Semitic statements) will be investigating the manner.

Yellen Yells About Interest Rates

Fed Chairwoman Janet Yellen delivered a 40-page speech (with 40 citations and 35 footnotes) about why the Fed will likely raise interest rates before the end of the year. The speech was so long (and presumably boring) that she almost passed out before the end. If you want to read the full speech (or have trouble sleeping), you can find it here.

#pnut4prez: Did Trump Just Get Dumped?

It was a rocky week for the budding romance between Trump and the media. First came the tiff between Fox and the Republican presidential candidate and then came the f-bombs Trump hurled at an Associated Press photographer. Calling the photographer a “f**king thief†for snapping a photo showing empty seats at a South Carolina event, Trump felt robbed of a good photo op apparently. He explained that the crowed wrapped themselves around the podium, and had they not done that there would’ve been fewer empty seats in the room. Mmhmm, yup, okay. This seems like a sound reason to swear at a photographer who was just doing his job.

Keeping Our Eye On…

  • Catalan Independence: Spain is facing a call for independence from its wealthiest region, Catalonia. An election on September 27 could lead to a majority for the pro-independence party, leading to a break up of Spain. Ay caramba!
  • Dieselgate: Somehow another “-gate” has come into this world. This time Volkswagen started it, but it looks like BMW might be in trouble now too. Standby.

  • Supermodel Wedding: Israeli supermodel Bar Refaeli is at the center of a political dispute between the transport minister and civil aviation authority after she requested to close airspace over her wedding for security reasons. The Israeli Transport Minister threatened to fire everyone if the request was approved.

LOOSE NUTS: FOR YOUR ENJOYMENT

Hold Me Closer Tiny Putin

Russian President Vladimir Putin, a man who defines what it means to be alpha, phoned Elton John to propose a meeting. This followed an incident a few weeks ago where Sir Elton was pranked by Russian comedians (they weren’t funny) into thinking he was discussing gay rights with the Russian President. This is the same President who said that he was fine with gay people as long as “you leave children in peace.”
