IN A NUTSHELL: MUST READ

How Many Senators Does It Take To Pass An Iran Deal?

Yesterday, enough Senators announced their support for the Iran Deal to ensure that the Senate could not override an Obama veto and block the deal. While we will certainly miss the “bachelor” style revelations of who is and is not supporting the deal, the world is interested to see what comes next.

The US still has to grapple with restive and insecure allies in the region — Israel, Saudi Arabia and an Iran that continues to destabilize its neighbors and exercise hegemony — all while ensuring that Iran does not violate the agreement. Quite a delicate balancing act.

Hungary: Can Everyone Stop While We Think This Through?

Hungary, the half of the Austro-Hungarian Empire everyone ignores, refused to let refugees board trains to the rest of Europe from Budapest today, citing “EU laws.” There seemed to be some general confusion about what laws and why. Germany was upset with the UK, Austria was upset with Hungary, Hungary was upset with Greece and the refugees seem to be caught in the middle of it all.

On a more serious note:
A photo of a young Syrian boy washed up on the beach as he tried to make the crossing to Greece served as a reminder of the human cost of this tragedy. If anyone in the Pnut community knows of an organization working to alleviate this crisis, please email us, and we will feature the organization in a future issue of the Pnut.

China: When In Doubt, Throw A Parade!

China will be commemorating 70 years since the end of World War II with a huge military parade filled with all sorts of fancy weapons and about 12,000 soldiers. The parade comes in the midst of a brewing financial crisis that has the stock market down 40% since its peak in June and its manufacturing strength at its lowest in three years. The parade is expected to boost morale, as long as no one asks how much it cost.

Real Life Tony Stark Strikes Again… In A Few Years

Elon Musk announced the (distant) unveiling date (it will start production in two years and preorders begin in March 2016) for the Tesla Model 3 sedan. As opposed to the the Model S (which only tech billionaires can afford), the Model 3 will be priced at $35,000. Musk said that the car will be different but “useful” and “not weird” (whatever that means). The car should be released in about three years… not sure why they made an announcement now.

#pnut4prez: ‘Operation Backbone’ — Jeb Vs. ‘Germophobe’ Trump

The Republican campaign trail got weird this week, as Jeb Bush mustered up the courage to strike back at Trump. Bush really let it rip on Wednesday via an interactive ad (deadly). The ad, which took the form of a quiz asking individuals a series of questions about which type of candidate they’d prefer, got stranger as the questions progressed. In one, he asked whether constituents would prefer a candidate who “strives to shake hands everywhere” or “is a germophobe when it comes to shaking hands?” Really hitting below the belt there Jeb…

Keeping Our Eye On…

  • Yemen Bombings: Yesterday, a double bombing killed at least 20 Yemenis at a shared mosque for Shiites and Sunnis and two Red Cross workers were targeted and shot. Some 3,000 people in Yemen have died since March, according to the U.N.
  • Guatemala President: In a country ridden with corruption, there is hope for justice. Having lost political immunity in a 132-0 congressional vote and accused of “customs fraud,” Guatemalan President Otto Perez Molina may be on his way out as he awaits trial.
  • Markets: They recovered as the Dow Jones (↑1.8%) and oil (↑1.25%) are both up following a shaky opening for September.

Fox News Anchor Sues Toy Company For ‘Emotional Damage’

While Fox News anchors are famed for their “interesting” interviews, one anchor went on the offensive after Hasbro Toys named a toy hamster after her. A spokesperson for the anchor in question, Harris Faulkner, said that Faulkner has “worked for decades to maintain her personal brand” but the toy is a “choking hazard” and bears a “physical resemblance” to her. She is seeking $5 million for emotional damage. Add toy companies alongside Dems to Fox News’ sh*t list.
